Wilson Elementary: Could you show me that in white?

The paint jobs on metal roofs at two Seminole County elementary schools have riled School Board members.

It seems that the district was entitled to a rebate if it went with white paint to cover the green roof at English Estates Elementary and the brown roof at Wilson Elementary.

But  when the $60,000 bill came it was for white paint at English Estates and brown paint at Wilson. The School Board was seeing red.

“I’m not sure who made the decision,”  Superintendent Walt Griffin told the School Board .

Deputy Superindendent  George Kosmac explained that somewhere in the process it was decided that the white roof would not go with the color scheme at Wilson, so the contractor was instructed to stick with brown.

“I understand aesthetics. When I am decorating my home, it is my money,” said School Board member Amy Lockhart. But this was taxpayers’ dollars, she said.

School Board member Dede Schaffner said she was not buying it either.

“White goes with anything,” she said.

Officials couldn’t immediately say how much the rebate would have been. But the painting flap comes at the same time that the School Board has been complaining that it does not have enough money to maintain roofs on its more than 60 school facilities around the county.
